Harnessing Value-Tensions for Productive Conflict: How Librarians Can Challenge the Status Quo, Persevere in the Face of Adversity and Nurture Better Futures
As Librarians, we hold many professional values of equitable access, responsible use, diversity of perspectives and intellectual freedom. Sometimes these and other values may exist in tension with one another, other values held by ourselves, our colleagues, or communities we are a part of. The polarities framework is a simple conversational tool that helps articulate these values and tensions for ourselves and with others. Reimagined as a table top card game, this session will help participants to reflect on and articulate value tensions that can be frustrating the impact they want to have in their work and life. Through facilitated play, and in conversation with others, participants will explore ways to harness the tensions towards 'greater purpose' rather than our 'deepest fears'. Harnessing value tensions is a leadership skill that is accessible for any Librarian who wants to power-charge their spheres of influence wherever that may be.

Rocking the Boat without Sinking in Library Space Planning
Libraries have long faced space concerns. These concerns stem from not having room for new programs and services, to having spaces to continue legacy duties of collection, preservation, and access. Any new professional needs the skills to navigate these choppy waters. This practice will give new and experienced professionals ideas about how to anticipate, plan, and execute creative and coherent operations for expansion.

In this session, participants will be tasked with developing a revitalization plan for a 100-year-old historic building. The King library is currently two buildings that are completely separate, even though they share a common wall. One side contains manuscripts, university archives, rare books, a letter press operation, a digital lab, and an oral history center. The other has science orientated collections, a map library, a digital scholarship lab, and a floor dedicated to storage. There are a combined total of four service points. Join us for a completely interactive session where participants will be split into groups to disrupt old spaces for new and invigorating services for a united King Library Research Hub. The presenters will share photographs, guiding principles, and floor plans. The small groups will brainstorm and then share their innovations to spark creative conversation and ideas that the presenters will use to influence the actual renovation. Importantly, this activity will generate takeaways and tips to inspire new spaces for library services, staff spaces, and collaboration for the next generation of users.

What Lies Beneath? Surfacing Failure and Adversity with Your Shadow CV
When you look at your CV or resume, what do you see reflected back? A perfect exemplar who has a curated list of select accomplishments? Years of work and life distilled to a few pages? What about the work you've done that is left out and significant life experiences that inform who you are? Whether you live to work, work to live, or fall somewhere on that spectrum, let's stop letting others dictate our value and define it for ourselves by creating a shadow CV or resume. Consider bringing a copy of your current CV or resume to this session.

In this workshop, we will discuss shadow CVs, reflect on our individual work experiences, and create a draft shadow CV or resume with the option to share in small groups. We will begin this session with a brief mindfulness exercise to center ourselves in the moment and create group norms so we can establish boundaries for a welcoming and understanding space. During this session we will draw on theories and practices around contemplative practice, slow librarianship, and others in order to look at our multifaceted identities, realizing that work is just one of many identities we have, and often not the most important, in contrast to the story our CVs tell. Bring your current CV or resume and explore what your shadow CV might look like. Presenters will share a couple shadow CV examples as inspiration and craft materials will be provided or you can bring an electronic device to work on.

Make a Game of It! Applying Game-Based Learning to the Research Process
Tired and bored by conventional library instruction that leaves students with little love for the library (or librarians), Megan and Katie set out to make waves in their library by turning classes into hands-on opportunities for students to engage with information literacy concepts. With no budget and using game-based learning strategies, they started with a "Research Relay" where first year students could apply and experience the stages of the research process, even where there was no research assignment from the instructor. The interactive lesson became a hit on campus and allowed students new to the research process to engage in multi-modal learning experiences that were also a lot of fun.

In this workshop, we'll explore the game development process, provide examples of how games can be developed and deployed with little to no budget, share tips and tricks for gaining buy-in from colleagues and faculty that "don't like change," and brainstorm together to design and create new active learning opportunities for students.

Equipment Lending in Libraries: Challenges and Success Stories
Technology equipment lending programs promote equitable access to technology resources, ensuring that individuals from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds have an opportunity to utilize devices that they may not be able to afford otherwise. This fosters inclusivity and bridges the digital divide within communities. They also offer patrons the chance to explore and experiment with various devices, enabling them to develop essential digital literacy skills. Users can access educational software, engage in multimedia projects, and gain hands-on experience with emerging technologies, thereby enhancing their learning opportunities.

The discussion will focus on the numerous benefits, as well as challenges for implementing and managing these programs. Through information sharing among the participants, everyone will learn from each other's experience, and create sustainable and impactful lending programs that serve their communities effectively in the digital age.

Gaming and Gamification in the Academic Library
While games and gamification theories have long been integrated into library practices, their adoption in academic libraries continues to face resistance from university administrators and some faculty members who question their utility. Compounding this challenge is the backdrop of shrinking library budgets and evolving expectations regarding educational materials.

We invite you to join a discussion where librarians and library workers can exchange insights. Together, we can address how to effectively communicate the value of games in libraries to administrators and colleagues who may not immediately recognize their benefits. Additionally, we'll explore practical ways to achieve meaningful outcomes even with limited financial resources. Your participation will contribute to a collective effort in maximizing the impact of games and gamification in academic library settings.

Shining a Light During Dark Times: Recentering on the Good
Navigating the turbulent seas for libraries, intellectual freedom, and personal careers might seem daunting, but fear not! In the wise words of Gandalf, "it is the small everyday deed of ordinary folks that keep the darkness at bay," and in these challenging times, we invite you to be part of a gathering that celebrates the extraordinary in the ordinary.

This session isn't just about combating the bad news; it's a celebration of the good, the heartening, and the hopeful. Each librarian carries a story worth sharing. Our collective light will dispel the shadows and leave us with a renewed sense of purpose. So, let's gather and share tales of triumph, no matter how modest, and let's let's weave a spell of encouragement, support, and shared joy.

Support Your Piers: Planning Employee Relationship Building Activities that Make an Impact
"How can we build necessary and supportive peer relationships when the structures for social connection are limited or don't exist? We build a "pie" network! This session will share considerations for planning and implementing a "summer camp" for employees at one institution, focusing on elements that can translate well to other settings. The summer camp structure can provide libraries' team members with the permission and encouragement needed to make time for enjoying walks, lunch, arts and crafts, and friendly baking competitions during work hours. Highlighting successes and areas for improvement from the existing program at Binghamton University Libraries, this session will dedicate time for attendees to create similar activities based on concepts from slow librarianship, ethics of care, and individual institutional contexts. Dive in!: Strategic Planning is for Everyone
Strategic planning is a common and necessary practice in institutions of higher education, including academic libraries. It can be dry, intimidating, and confusing! However, it also creates shared vision, moves people in a common direction, and provides individual contributors with new opportunities to lead. This session will provide participants with practical experience and tools to jumpstart strategic planning. We will work together to craft model components of a strategic framework, including mission, vision, goals, objectives, and key results, utilizing The Collective at Sea as our shared example institution. We will explore the distinction between a mission and vision statement and define high-level goals and specific deliverables integral to meeting them. Additionally, we will share our strategies for creating institution-wide engagement with this new framework, as well as some challenges that accompany organizational change of this nature.

There is No Box: Strategic Thinking and Execution for Libraries and Systems
Be proactive, not reactive. The Ramapo Catskill Library System is breaking the status quo and moving the organization and member libraries forward by creating personnel positions that offer consultations, marketing, and hot-topic initiatives to support libraries, legislators, and communities. The creation of these positions has allowed libraries the opportunity to have localized support when going out for budget votes, PR/marketing campaigns, sustainability initiatives, public book/program challenges, and more. Through transparent discussions with board members, the Executive Director has done the unthinkable in today's climate, added three full-time positions to the organization that have not been traditional departments in library systems. But they are not done yet! In this session, the Executive Director and two personnel from the new departments will provide the road map regarding how these positions were created, why there is a need for them, the success they have garnered, and what's next in the way of continuing to further the profession and library community through the Ramapo Catskill Library System. This session will also provide an opportunity for attendees to have deeper discussions with the panel regarding the future of libraries and how they may position their own organizations to be in a healthy relationship with their boards and communities.

We Heart Art: Teaching Art and Design Principles through Makerspace Instruction
Makerspaces have revolutionized libraries, expanding the services they offer and creating opportunities to engage patrons in new and exciting ways. However, many makerspace activities focus on disciplines outside the arts, like engineering, and while creativity is a focus, artistic principles and formal elements of design are left relatively unexplored. In this session, an art librarian and a makerspace librarian inspire attendees to collaboratively brainstorm to bridge the gap between art and makerspace instruction with lesson plans/activities that explore connections between the Bauhaus, a German art and design school, surrealism, and maker-centered learning concepts.

Remixing Library Workshops Into 15 Minutes of Pop-In Fun
Who else is tired of traditional library workshops? Based on low turnout, repetitive workshop offerings, and a general sense of being in a rut …it’s not just our patrons but also librarians who would welcome a new approach!

Plugging into our students’ need for quick and practical tips, MSU Librarians challenged the existing library workshop status quo and introduced “Pop-in Workshops.” Long prep times were replaced with the flexibility and excitement to try something new, based on librarian’s existing enthusiasm for relevant topics. One-hour workshops became 15 minutes. Long winded explanations became simple demonstrations of specific skills that attendees could immediately put to use. The standard basement classroom location was replaced with a high visibility first floor space. Join us to see how the MSU library hacked our library workshops and switched out our long-board (or long-bored) format of library workshops for a snappy overhaul, offering enthusiastic quick prep, more flexibility for patrons, and fast paced instruction fun.

In this session, we’ll share the smooth sailing and rough seas of implementing Pop-in Workshops at our library. We’ll guide you through a take-home worksheet, giving you time to brainstorm how to get your library on board, topics you could offer right away, and how to use this format to re-spark enthusiasm for library workshop instruction. A workshop about workshops… it’s all very meta. Jump into the deep end of library workshops with us and make new instructional waves at your library!

Can We Rock the Boat? Sharing Salary Negotiation Stories
Did you negotiate your starting salary at your first library job? If so, were you successful? Have you discussed your salary or salary negotiation with colleagues? Once hired, were you able to re-negotiate your salary or address compression issues? Unfortunately, research shows that many women do not rock the boat and negotiate for their starting salaries. If this club includes you, how did you rebound? Salaries may be a taboo topic, but through sharing our stories we can learn from each other and lift each other up. Let's explore how we might collectively act to encourage competitive and liveable salaries for folks working in libraries. Two librarians who served on a library faculty salary study taskforce at their university library will be guiding this roundtable discussion while drawing from the literature and conversations they had at a state-wide conference.

Creating Ripples of Opportunity: Designing Impactful Library Internship Programs
All too often, library school students are left to seek out scarce or nonexistent internship opportunities to fulfill requirements before graduation. These requirements are in place because there is tremendous value in experiential learning, however the lack of carefully designed programs means that the work experience many students receive before graduation is hastily thrown together without proper planning. This can lead to missed learning opportunities for them and missed opportunities for us to cultivate the next generation of information professionals.

This workshop will provide participants a hands-on environment to plan for internships at their libraries. The first part of the session will include a discussion on garnering administrator buy-in, supervisor responsibilities, paid vs. unpaid internships, getting the word out, and other practical considerations. During the second part of the session, participants will be given a template and suggestions for how to create their own internship.

Seas the Day! Planning to Make a Splash
Sometimes the day-to-day details of our lives can feel like trying to muddle through the murky waters of the unknown. As the keepers of information, there is a lot we must store in our heads. This is where a good planner can be invaluable. Planning out the days and weeks can help us reduce stress and mental clutter, remember all those important meetings, and allow us to leave room for more creative activities that we love. There are a variety of planners out there to wade through and figuring out which one to use can feel like floating without a life raft. We are a creative bunch and this skill-building session will allow participants to tap into their creativity to design their own planner.

During this session, participants will receive step-by-step instructions to create their own basic planner using digital tools. We will start with a blank design and end with a fun basic planner that is easy to use with most note-taking apps. Participants are encouraged to bring their device so they can work along with the convenor to enhance the hands-on program experience.
